Meet Your Friendly Neighborhood Campus Ministry
We love God’s Word.
What if you liked math, but you’d never read a math textbook? Or thought chemistry was cool, but you’d never spent time learning actual, you know, chemistry-type things? You probably wouldn’t be very good at it, would you? And, even though you liked it, you probably wouldn’t enjoy doing it that much. Christianity and the Bible are sort of like this. As Christians, we know that the Bible is the primary way that we can learn about God—who he is, what he’s like, and how we can relate to him. The Bible is our main source of both spiritual truth and day-to-day guidance. Our goal is for every InterVarsity ministry to be saturated with scriptural engagement and obedience. We want the same for you: to grow in love for, knowledge of, and obedience to, God’s Word, so that following Jesus becomes a joyful experience. At InterVarsity, we give you the tools you need to read the Bible with skill, to apply it to your life, and to begin letting it change you from the inside out. We give you a space to ask tough questions, learn, and make the Christian faith your Christian faith. We love community. God made us to connect with one another. Even though it can sometimes seem like we’re the only people in the world who feel like we do, no person is an island. Life isn’t supposed to be done solo. College isn’t, either. Even when surrounded by thousands of other students, sometimes it can be hard to find a place to plug in and connect with people. It can be even harder if you also want a place to make Christian friends, grow spiritually, or maybe just ask questions about the big mysteries of life— truth, purpose, life after death—with safe people who care about you. InterVarsity builds the best kinds of communities: ones full of ethnic and social diversity (Wouldn’t a group of people all just like you be boring?), where hard questions can be explored (Why am I here? Who is Jesus? What does my racial identity mean?), and lifelong friendships can start. We love the world. When we look at our world, we can’t help but notice that there’s a lot of pain, violence, and injustice. Still, the consistent stance of the Bible is that God loves the world. Because of that, InterVarsity loves the world too—and (if we can be just a little poetic) love never runs from unlovely things. It always runs toward them. Students like you are eager to learn how to engage the world around them. You want to live a life that is soaked with the things that give it satisfaction and meaning: virtues like compassion, justice, and courage. You don’t want to hide out in some safe space all tucked away from the hurt and healing, the epic drama, the real stuff of life on this broken and beautiful planet Earth. You want to play a part in it. Good news! God wants that for you, too. And so do we. InterVarsity doesn’t have a “bunker mentality.” We aren’t wearing heaven goggles. We train students to be leaders that aren’t afraid of the world, but instead enter into it redemptively, to be “salt and light,” to use two of Jesus’ metaphors. InterVarsity students go on to become leaders in their local churches, in their home communities, and in their workplaces. They don’t run away from the unlovely things in our world, like racial division, systemic injustice, or hurting people. They face them, head-on, running toward them with the transforming power of the gospel. For 75 years InterVarsity has given students like you, on campuses like yours, the chance to meet Jesus and have their whole lives changed by him. We’re all on campus for something. That’s why we’re here. We hope you’ll join us. |
